With stunning Tudor-style architecture, beautiful decor, and all the tech you could ask for (not to mention its own resident ghost!), our venue is a strong choice for any event, from award ceremonies to company updates and conferences. And, here’s why your events will be a success at The Insurance Hall!
Steeped in history
Home to the UK’s insurance sector since 1932, the building is steeped in the area’s history. From the site’s origins as the location of a manor house, through its incarnations as an inn and wool merchant’s hall, to the current building’s use as a first aid station in WWII, this location has seen its fair share of action!
The current building was designed to hark back to Tudor days and was opened by King George V – who later became patron of the Chartered Insurance Institute in 1934. The building is full of nods to the past: on the second floor landing you will find the commercial sign of The Axe, the inn that stood on the site from the 14th century until it was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1666. And in The Great Hall, huge stained-glass windows that pays homage to the insurance companies that funded the building of the hall.
This venue wears its history on its sleeve – and guests are guaranteed to be fascinated by the history written on the walls. Most intriguing, perhaps, is the legend of ‘The White Lady’, the ghost of a murdered nun from the convent that was once adjacent to the site, who is said to be seen once every five years… the prospect of spotting an apparition is sure to draw in the delegates like nothing else!
